The first change in determining the amount of the remuneration is related to a shift in attention towards the position instead of the person. Within this framework there was also a shift from an internal to an external orientation. Simultaneously with these changes, in the United States the amount of remuneration started to increase from the 1950s onwards, after an initial shrinkage due to the Great Depression and the Second World War. In that context, and after a period of compression that lasted for about forty years, the pay gap between executives and the rest of the employees in the US has steadily increased to the benefit of executives since the 1970s. Europe is following the same path to a lesser but consistent extent.
