The Commission Communication ‘AccelerateEU – Energy Union: Affordable and Secure Energy through Accelerated Action’ sets out a package of short-term relief measures and medium- to long-term structural actions in response to rising energy prices and continued dependence on imported fossil fuels. Taxation plays a supporting but clearly identifiable role within this broader policy framework.

In the short term, the Communication confirms that Member States may deploy a range of targeted fiscal measures to mitigate the impact of energy price shocks on households and businesses.
