11.2.1 Working definition of religion

For the purposes of this study, religion encompasses theistic and non-theistic beliefs and indicates a worldview with these – not necessarily cumulative – characteristic features: to believe in the supernatural, the sacred, in a god or a higher power with or without a related lifestyle; the experience of an extrasensory reality; participation in or abstention from worship – alone or in community with others – in the private sphere or in a building of public worship; the performance of rituals; other forms of activities, expressions or personal or communal behaviour arising from or determined by religious conviction or certain ethical principles.
