UK banks do not exen great influence over the companies they finance. They do not take equity stakes to cement the relationship with a borrowing customer. There could be a conflict of interest in their role as lender and shareholder. Companies often borrow from quite a number of banks. It is not typical for the lead banker to want to have influence in a company.1
