Janis has identified eight symptoms of groupthink divided into three types: overestimation of the group – its power and morality; closed-mindedness; and pressures towards conformity (Janis 1971: 44-46, 74; 1982: 174-175). Below, these symptoms are described and examples given from the cases studied.
